about us

From “Why not?” to “Why would we ever leave?”

Some people plan their lives. Others find themselves standing barefoot on an empty black sand beach in Cahuita, taking in the serenity and seclusion, and thinking: This might be it.

We’re Jim and Annette—travelers, divers, seekers of the unspoiled and unforgettable. After roaming through the Caribbean with an eye for a place to plant roots, we “accidentally” found Cahuita. A last-minute pivot from a Bocas del Toro dive trip turned into a life-changing detour when Annette asked, “What about Costa Rica?”

Jimmy: “We’ve been there.”
(Once a lawyer, always a lawyer. You need to convince him.)

Annette: “Not the Caribbean coast.”
(She’s learned how to handle him. Point one.)

Jimmy: “Caribbean coast? How’s that any different than the Pacific side?”
(Counterpoint.)

Annette: “For starters, Talamanca has black and white beaches—some of the best in Costa Rica. Three different types of turtles nest there! Three! Not to mention surfing, a national park and a national wildlife refuge, natural waterfalls adjacent to indigenous communities… And music. You love music. And the Caribbean food is different from the rest of the country—”
(Laying out the facts.)

Jimmy: “OK. Let’s go!”
(And with that, their lives were never the same.)

Cahuita had it all—lush jungle, wild beaches, howler monkeys for alarm clocks, calypso rhythms drifting on the breeze. Add in a national park with hiking trails that hug the shoreline, and a community with deep Afro-Caribbean roots and a strong sense of place, and we were hooked. Two return trips later, it wasn’t a question of if anymore. It was just how soon?

Why Cahuita?

Cahuita isn’t a resort town. It’s not curated. It’s not sterile.

It’s real—a vibrant coastal village where you’ll find reggae beats playing next to the scent of coconut rice and a neighbor waving from their porch. Here, nature isn’t landscaped. It’s lived in.

The town sits between wild jungle and gentle surf, with trails you can wander for hours and still spot something new—a sloth napping, a toucan flitting overhead, or a crab doing battle with a piece of driftwood. We love that this town honors its Afro-Caribe history and values the richness of both land and culture. It’s family-centered, community-minded, and fiercely proud of its roots.

Life here slows down, and thank God for that.

About Our Rentals

We host travelers who aren’t looking for five-star resorts or pre-packaged tours. Our guests are the kind of people who love the offbeat, the untamed, the path just outside the guidebook. They tend to be curious, independent, and full of stories—and we love swapping a few of ours too.

Our properties are designed to complement the environment, not compete with it. Whether you’re swinging in a hammock or sipping coffee on a porch surrounded by birdsong, we hope you feel the same peace we did the first time we arrived here.

Come stay. Stay curious. Stay present. Stay wild.

We’ll leave the light on—or the fireflies will.
